Exercise is a cornerstone to our health, but how far do these benefits go?

Establishing a regular routine that is constantly varied, functional movement is directly associated with our longevity in life. According to a recent article published by doctors with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, titled Association of Cardiorespiratory Fitness With Long-term Mortality Among Adults Undergoing Exercise Treadmill Testing, “Cardiorespiratory fitness is a modifiable indicator of long-term mortality, and health care professionals should encourage patients to achieve and maintain high levels of fitness” (2018).

The study found that habitual and high aerobic fitness is associated with long-term mortality, especially among older patients. These findings are independent of age, gender, race/ethnicity and other diseases or disorders. Increased cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular benefits including reductions in:

  • Coronary artery disease

  • Hypertension

  • Diabetes

  • Stroke

  • Cancer

Regardless of gender or race, increased aerobic fitness, especially at elite and high-performance levels, results in increased longevity. For older adults, benefits include reductions in overall frailty and maintenance of physical independence.
